March 3, 2006 - Cobra engine together! |
|
|
I
finally rounded up all the parts for my Shelby Clone motor.
It's actually at 1969 302 bored .40 with Keith Black popup pistons, 1970
351W heads with some port work, bigger valves and a trick Holman Moody
solid lifter Lemans cam from the sixties. Holman Moody still has the
original specs for this cam and can grind them on order. Ray's Auto
Machine provided most of the machine work and the assembly was balanced by
Power By Ford in Orlando. In the picture below you can see the
trick Holman & Moody valve adjustment spec plate bolted to the driver
side cylinder head. Back in the sixties, that cool little
thunderbird with the red CP meant serious Ford Horsepower! By the
way, Lee Holman is a very nice guy who is kind enough to take the time to
talk to anyone interested in Ford Performance. He also owns a real
GT40! |

Here's the GT350 Clone motor sitting on my engine stand. Not everything is correct as some compromises had to be made due to cost or drivability issues. The HiPo dizzy has a Pertonics module, the aluminum water pump is from FlowKooler and the fuel pump is a repro from Mustang's Unlimited. I don't think this pump is going to be adequate, but it looks close to right and a real early HiPo pump costs a fortune. I plan to install an electric fuel pump to back it up anyway. |

Here's another view showing the trick cast aluminum Cobra oil pan from Branda and the '65 HiPo alternator pulley. That's a brand new Holley Lemans 715 sitting on the manifold. Carl's Ford Parts sells these beauties and they are a bunch better than working with 30 year old swap meet carbs. I have an engine cradle under construction and plan to break-in the cam before the car returns from the painter. My neighbors will love me!
