October 30, 2005 - Disk brake upgrade for $500!

The '65 GT350 project hit a snag and we had to postpone the paint until after the holidays.  Seems that all the talk about the "Real Estate Bubble", $3.00 a gallon gas and the hurricanes slowed the Florida real estate business enough that the boss (a.k.a. - wife)  wanted to wait to see what happens.  Business picked up as soon as everything cleared up a bit, but in the mean time I decided to upgrade the front brakes to disks using 1971 mustang spindles.  This is a real trick setup that can save you about half over the high dollar kits.  The spindles bolt right up and all the other parts can be bought cheap at your local auto parts store.  It's amazing how much money you can save if you try them first.  Most of the catalog prices are at least double the over the counter parts store prices.   The only problem you run into is that the 1971 tie rod ends are bigger, so you must change them along with the rest.   If you have any questions about this swap, email me at phil@lakefrontflorida.com and I will be happy to help out.

In this picture you can see that the 1971 Mustang spindles and rotors bolt up fine.  I left the calipers off for now until the car is painted.

Here's a picture of the 1971 spindles mounted to the '65 A-arms.  Looks like factory!

Here's the back side showing the 1971 tie-rod ends.  I had to shorten each end about 1" to get the  alignment right.
