Aluminum Radiator Installation |
|
|
After researching the cost of a new radiator and the cooling requirements of the big block, I made the decision to install a custom aluminum radiator from Summit Racing. This project looked easy in the beginning, but turned into a month long fabrication project. If you don't want to cut up your car, or aren't handy with tools, forget it and buy a stock radiator. My car is going to have air conditioning and long car show idles in our Florida summers are a definite problem. |

I could have mounted the aluminum radiator in the stock location with custom brackets. If you go this route, you will only have a few inches between the fan and the radiator and not enough room for a clutch fan. Here you can see where I have cut away the back of the stock radiator support. The custom metal tray allows height adjustments and supports the new radiator via threaded rods running through the frame. |

The new radiator is mounted in rubber at the bottom and the sides. The bottom radiator hose is a shortened 1958 352 hose. The top radiator hose is from a1969 428 Torino Cobra. There's about 1 1/2" between the radiator and the front of the clutch fan. Definitely enough room for a shroud. Came out very nice, but it was a whole lot of work. Glad that's over... |

You can see the aluminum radiator through the front of the grill. Kind of makes you wonder what's in there... Cammer maybe? |
