August 27, 2010   Aluminum Radiator Installation

After researching the cost of a new radiator and the cooling requirements of the big block, I made the decision to install a custom aluminum radiator from Summit Racing.  This project looked easy in the beginning, but turned into a month long fabrication project.  If you don't want to cut up your car, or aren't handy with tools, forget it and buy a stock radiator.  My car is going to have air conditioning and long car show idles in our Florida summers are a definite problem.

I could have mounted the aluminum radiator in the stock location with custom brackets.  If you go this route, you will only have a few inches between the fan and the radiator and not enough room for a clutch fan. Here you can see where I have cut away the back of the stock radiator support.  The custom metal tray allows height adjustments and supports the new radiator via threaded rods running through the frame.

The new radiator is mounted in rubber at the bottom and the sides. The bottom radiator hose is a shortened 1958 352 hose.  The top radiator hose is from a1969 428 Torino Cobra.  There's about 1 1/2" between the radiator and the front of the clutch fan. Definitely enough room for a shroud.  Came out very nice, but it was a whole lot of work.  Glad that's over...

You can see the aluminum radiator through the front of the grill.  Kind of makes you wonder what's in there...  Cammer maybe?
